![]() I've also checked all the aux fuses but none seem to be blown. PS I put a good battery on the car, since the Haynes manual mentions a bat with a kaput cell can cause the alt to overcharge, but with this good battery on it the warning light is still coming on. I just spent 80 quid getting the alt replaced for nothing).Īt any rate, if this car has a smart charge thingy on it, where exactly is it? And how difficult would it be to pull the wiring out so I can inspect it? I've managed to follow one of the positive wires (the charging line I'm assuming) from the battery terminal round behind the engine but then I lose it as it disappears into the depths of the nether regions of the compartment so I guess I'd need to jack the car up and get under it to pick up the trail (I couldn't be bothered to do this after I got the car back from the shop today since I was hungry and was also fed up with the hassle this has been causing me). Is that even possible on my car? I'm guessing not (sounds like bollocks to me tbh but what do I know. I've been having a read about some things, and I found one post on a forum where someone was having a similar issue and he disconnected the plug on the alternator which someone else identified as the smart charge connector, this apparently made the battery light go off and the battery started charging normally. While it's possible the alternator I got off eBay is a dud, assuming for now it isn't, and the voltage regulator is also OK, what can I do to solve this? The mechanic thinks there's likely a broken wire in the loom somewhere, or if the car's got the smart charge system on it that might have gone south (I presume it does but I'm not entirely sure - it's a 2001 Ghia X). When they tested at the alternator end it said it wasn't being charged at all but testing at the battery's end it was reading around 15.5v. They did a diagnostic and found that the battery is being overcharged. So despite giving me all the signs that the alternator was the problem on my Mondy, I got a second hand one off eBay and had my local mechanics fit it and the battery light is still on.
